Chestnut Hill Cinni-Mini Crunch (Family Dollar)

At some point in my childhood, I was exposed to Cinnamon Toast Crunch. With its crisp whole wheat and rice squares covered with sugar and cinnamon, I was immediately drawn in. As an adult, I still like the General Mills cereal, even if I realize it’s got a fair amount of sugar.
Name brand breakfast cereals aren’t cheap, though, so I always keep an eye out for generic alternatives. Aldi, for instance, makes a pretty good Cinnamon Toast Crunch imitation. Walmart has one, too. And some dollar stores also carry their own knockoff versions, including Family Dollar.
Chestnut Hill Cinni-Mini Crunch is a Family Dollar exclusive. It currently comes in a 12.8 ounce box and costs $1.95. That comes out to about 15.2 cents an ounce. For comparison, Aldi sells its imitation for 11.3 cents an ounce, Walmart costs 14.1 cents an ounce, and the name brand is 17.1 cents an ounce. Family Dollar, then, isn’t the cheapest price, especially among generics, but is a little cheaper than the name brand.
I’d say the taste is fine. It’s maybe a little more sugary and a little less cinnamon-y than the name brand or many of its imitators. That’s just my opinion, though: one tester in my family said it basically tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Everyone agrees that it’s crisp and not bad on its own merits. I liked it enough to continue to eat it.
Nutritionally, it’s very close to Cinnamon Toast Crunch and virtually identical to some of the generics I’ve tried. It has a lot of sugar — 14 grams per serving — and 180 calories. It does have some nutritional value, but if you’re looking to cut down on sugar this isn’t your best breakfast option.
The Verdict:
Chestnut Hill Cinni-Mini Crunch from Family Dollar is a serviceable choice if you want a Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal without Cinnamon Toast Crunch prices. It doesn’t taste quite like the name brand, but it’s close. Likewise, it’s not as cheap as some generic versions, but it’s still cheaper than the name brand. If you need your fix of this cereal and you’re in a Family Dollar, it isn’t a bad option.
