Clover Valley Frosted Flakes (Dollar General)

In my opinion, regular corn flakes aren’t a very good breakfast cereal. At least not without some serious doctoring. Even then, they have a bland taste and they get soggy too quickly. Similar to how Rice Krispies are better in Rice Krispie Treats than as a cereal, I think corn flakes are better in recipes than as a cereal.

But Frosted Flakes? That’s a different story. What a difference sprinkling on a little frosting makes. They’re still prone to getting soggy, but the taste factor is a definite improvement. It’s no wonder, then, that Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes have remained a popular cereal since its introduction in 1952.

Many stores sell Frosted Flakes, but you can also find generic imitations of the cereal, too. Dollar General sells one such imitation.

Clover Valley Frosted Flakes is a Dollar General exclusive. It currently comes in a 10.5-ounce box for $1.75, or about 16.7 cents an ounce. For comparison, Walmart’s Great Value Frosted Flakes run 10.1 cents an ounce, while a box of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes comes out to 16.6 cents an ounce.

To be fair, both the Great Value and the Kellogg’s boxes are much bigger than the Dollar General Frosted Flakes, so you have to get more cereal — and pay more total — to get that price per ounce. Still, if you’re feeding a family that is going to go through these quickly, you might opt for another retailer if you can. On the other hand, if you want the convenience of getting in and out of a dollar store or you want a smaller box, Dollar General may be what you want.

Taste-wise, the DG Frosted Flakes are perfectly fine. They taste more or less like the name brand, with both that light flaky corn flake base and that touch of sugar that makes the flakes taste like something better than corn flakes. I’ve had Kellogg’s and I’ve had generic equivalents, and I think these are on par with those. Maybe the name brand is a little better, but not enough that it’s that big a deal to me.

Nutritionally, these flakes are pretty similar in calories, sugar, and ingredients to the name brand. The 13 grams of added sugars is the price you pay for the sugary flavor, but the cereal is a decent source of vitamins and minerals.

The Verdict:

Dollar General Frosted Flakes are a respectable take on the legendary cereal. They’re not the best value per ounce you can find, even compared to the name brand, but the total box price is low and the taste is good enough as a Kellogg’s substitute. If you’re in DG and need your Frosted Flakes fix, these aren’t a bad option.
