I go back and forth between bar soap and body wash. On one hand, there’s a part of me that likes bar soap. It’s compact, significantly cheaper, and is undoubtedly better for the environment since there’s less plastic package waste. Pulling a fresh bar of soap out of the paper packaging and building up a lather is not a bad way to start a day.

Body wash, though, has its advantages. It’s easier to use, less messy to store, and (usually) harder to drop. In addition, some body washes can double as shampoo or even conditioner, which I don’t mind having from time to time.

In my shower, I tend to keep both on hand, and I use both depending on the day and the circumstances. Most stores carry them both, from pharmacies to big box stores to grocery stores. That includes dollar stores.

Studio Selection Fresh Mist Body Wash (Dollar General)

Studio Selection Body Wash can be found at Dollar General. Studio Selection is one of DG’s private labels, which means it can only be found at Dollar General. It’s also a fairly recent label, having appeared in stores in 2020 or 2021. Before that, Dollar General body wash was sold under the DG Health house brand.

It comes in a few scents. I went with the fresh mist.

At the time of this post, the body wash cost $2.25 for a 16-fluid ounce bottle. That comes out to about 14 cents a bottle, which is on the low end of prices for body washes out there. Dial Body Wash, which this bottle claims to imitate, is currently closer to 20 cents an ounce. You might be able to find a Suave bottle for a little cheaper, but overall this is pretty budget-priced.

This body wash is adequate, if unspectacular. The gel has enough consistency to it to not be excessively runny, but the lather isn’t very inspired. I used more than a quarter-sized amount and had trouble generating much in the way of foam or bubbles. This isn’t uncommon with cheap body washes, but it was still a bit of a letdown. On the plus side, it does smell nice and I did get clean.

The Verdict:

If you need a cheap body wash, Dollar General sells a cheap body wash under its Studio Selection house brand. It does the job of cleaning, although the lather isn’t much to write home about. In most cases, I’d probably prefer to go with either a higher-quality body wash or just a good bar of soap, but if you need body wash, this will suffice.
