Fast Bites Microwaveable Sandwiches (Dollar General, Dollar Tree)

Fast Bites Sandwiches

A while back, I found myself in a dollar store when I stumbled upon a collection of frozen sandwiches. They were labeled Fast Bites, and they were priced at $1 each. I’m not unfamiliar with the idea of microwaveable frozen sandwiches; my family sometimes gets a case of the White Castle variety.

I was intrigued by these Fast Bites. Not only could they heat from frozen in a microwave in a little more than a minute, but they came in a collection of different sandwiches. I picked up four different varieties of them, but there are others out there.

I found Fast Bites sandwiches at Dollar Tree and Dollar General, both in the frozen section, but some other retailers also sell them, including Walmart.

All of them heat from frozen. To cook, you take the sandwich out of the box, open up one end of the plastic wrap, set the sandwich on a microwave-safe plate, and heat. Each sandwich has a slightly different cook time — you can find it on the side of the box — but most of them heat for somewhere between 70-85 seconds. You then let the sandwich sit for 1 minute before taking it out of the wrapper and eating it. Be careful not to burn yourself.

It’s not exactly McDonalds or even homemade, but I thought the sandwich had enough flavor that I didn’t need to doctor it. That’s good, because it doesn’t come with any condiments other than the sandwich itself.

My family, though, was divided. I liked it, as did my daughter, but my wife and other daughter found it meh.

My whole family likes breaded chicken, but this earned only average ratings across the board. Everyone thought it was a little spongy, with only a mild amount of flavor. No one hated it, but it wasn’t anyone’s top pick either.

The grilled chicken was the consensus top pick in our family. All four of us thought it was in the top 2, and a couple of us, including me, picked it as #1. The flavor was surprisingly robust, and the cheese was tasty, too. I didn’t think this needed anything added to it. I would buy it again, and the rest of the family agreed.

This was the most polarizing sandwich of the ones we tried. My wife liked it best, and one of my daughters thought it was good. My other daughter and I thought it was only meh; I’d personally place it #3 behind the grilled chicken and cheeseburger. The BBQ flavor is there but the patty isn’t smothered in sauce — I thought that limited the flavor, but it also cut down on the mess, which is a consideration if you’re eating one of these at work.

The Verdict:

One of our family members called Fast Bites cafeteria food, and they’re not far off the mark. The sandwiches are decent but not special. You can definitely do better yourself if you make sandwiches or burgers on your own. And, honestly, it’s not that hard to microwave and assemble a chicken sandwich. But if you don’t have the time, and if you’re looking for something different, these aren’t bad.

Our family picked the grilled chicken as our top pick, but we were divided on the rest of the sandwiches. No one hated them, though … and maybe that’s about all you can ask for in a frozen sandwich.
