DG Health Antiseptic Mouthwash (Dollar General)
Mouthwash serves many purposes. Most people associate it with fresh breath and healthy teeth, but mouthwash also plays a role in gum health, too. Listerine has historically been recognized as one of the better mouthwashes for prevention against gum diseases like gingivitis, making it a useful mouthwash especially for people who have a history of gum problems.
You can buy Listerine in a lot of places, including many dollar stores, and in a variety of flavors and formulations. (The original flavor has the highest concentration of alcohol but accomplishes that with a taste that most people aren’t fans of.) But we now have a number of generic equivalents, too: just about every big box store and pharmacy has its own generic equivalent to Listerine. So do some dollar stores, including Dollar General.
DG Health Antiseptic Mouthwash comes in a few sizes, including the familiar 1.5-liter bottle that we see with Listerine and its imitators. The 1.5-liter bottle costs, at the time of this post, about $3, which puts it right around the same price as a similarly sized Equate Antiseptic Mouthwash from Walmart. The Dollar General mouthwash is about 6 cents an ounce, the same as the Walmart mouthwash, and less than the 11 cents an ounce for Walgreens antiseptic mouthwash. The DG mouthwash is distributed by Dollar General’s Dolgencorp subsidiary.
The most important thing I can say about the DG antiseptic mouthwash is that it’s formulated pretty much exactly like Listerine. Its active ingredients include eucalyptol, menthol, methyl cailcylate, and thymol, and all in the same proportions as are found in Listerine and generic equivalents like Equate. From looking at the ingredients list and in using both Listerine and Dollar General’s antiseptic mouthwash, I’m hard-pressed to find any differences.
The Verdict:
Dollar General’s DG Health Antiseptic Mouthwash is a competitive option for a Listerine-style mouthwash. It is formulated the same, appears to perform the same, and is the same price per ounce as other low-cost generics like Walmart’s Equate. If you’re looking for a Listerine mouthwash that’s inexpensive, this is as good as any. Recommended.
Why doesn’t DG carry the large bottles anymore? I can’t find them anywhere. My zip is 46172
