I’m constantly looking for new room décor. Usually I prefer bright colors and things that make the whole room pop. Seascapes and other aquatic pieces often catch my eye.

I could name about a dozen places to find décor before coming to Family Dollar. But, to my surprise, the dollar store had an aisle dedicated to canvases and knicknacks to furnish your home. One canvas stood out to me, and since it was affordable, it came home with me that afternoon.

This piece is simply called a coastal canvas with foil gel. A coastal canvas is simply a picture of the beach, life under the ocean, etc. And foil gel is just a clear substance with small bits of foil added into it to add some shine to a piece.

The brand name is Interiors by Design, which is from Midwood Brands. Anything with Midwood Brands on it is a Family Dollar exclusive. This canvas was $5.00 at the time of this post, which is less than many other canvas pieces out there like this one, and it’s 11.81 x 11.81 inches. While I’m using this for my bedroom, I feel it definitely leans more toward being bathroom décor, and it was sold alongside at least one other canvas with a similar ocean theme.

What stood out to me about this piece is that they used a foil gel to give the canvas some texture. They also used a metallic-like product to outline the turtle and make the turtle’s shell pop more. For a dollar store, I’m impressed. This feels like something I would find at someplace like Target for much more. You can tell that detail was important to them, and all-around, it’s a great piece.

The Verdict:

The Interiors by Design Coastal Canvas with Foil Gel is well worth the $5.00 I’ve spent on it. While it’s important to support professional artists when you can, if you’re looking for something affordable and nice to accent any room in your home, don’t completely rule out Family Dollar. For a low-priced store, I’m happy with the way it turned out, and I hope to keep it in my room for many years in the future.
